It’s been a year to celebrate at State Library Victoria. In 2017 we revealed the designs for our Vision 2020 redevelopment, raised $27.7 million to help fund the project, and started construction. Along the way, our visitors made us the busiest state library in Australia. We added more than 28,000 items to our collection, including amazing works from Rick Amor and Rennie Ellis, and answered more than 200,000 of your questions. Thank you for your support this year. We appreciate it. | State Libra

🕰️ Travel through time with State Library Victoria! 👋 Welcome to the 1880s. Victoria's prosperity peaked in the 1880s. The afterglow of the goldrush remained, construction rates were up and the population was booming. The children of goldrush migrants were grown and began to seek land of their own. Many were able to realise this dream, placing their money in new banking institutions, building societies and investment companies. Grand buildings and skyscrapers were erected. The Victoria

Accessibility isn’t just about meeting requirements, it’s about making digital spaces better for everyone. In our latest SLV LAB conversation, we chat with Scott Hollier from the Centre for Accessibility Australia about how assistive technologies shape the way we all use the web - often in ways we don’t even notice. The conversation explores how accessibility and creativity go hand in hand, what AI is getting right (and wrong) when it comes to accessible tech, and why libraries remain trusted pl

Ever dreamt of living in a tree? This week’s From the vault film uncovers some astonishing images of weird things people in Victoria did with giant trees, back in the 1800s. (Think: kitchen, man cave, horse house). This film was inspired by a blog post by our librarian Kylie Best, which tells the tale of how she helped our patron, Marion, to uncover the mystery behind a strange photograph that belonged to her great grandfather. Meet our preservation technician, Savina Hopkins. Savina, our third Gem from the Library, re-houses items in our collection so that they're stable, protected and preserved. Her meticulous work helps slow down the chemical and physical degradation of the millions of books, manuscripts, ephemera, photographs and objects in our collection. Take a sneak peek inside the studio, where, like many of us, some new collection items are under strict quarantine regulations! Learn more: slv.vic.gov.au/storie
